Protected Action Ballot Required Effective Online Solution to Complete Vote

Industrial workers

In this Protected Action Ballot, the Union initially arranged a physical ballot to be conducted via post. This ballot only achieved a 33% participation rate. Industrial action is only authorised by a ballot if at least 50% of those on the voting roll participated in the ballot, and more than 50% of those votes cast are in favour of the industrial action.

The Union experienced two major issues in their initial vote;

  • The time it took to have the ballot papers sent and received by the ballot agent; and
  • Letters going missing and going to the incorrect addresses due to poor data as some members reported not receiving their ballot papers.

After the failed physical ballot, the Union contacted CiVS to conduct the ballot electronically using our multi-channel voting solution. CiVS was ordered by the Fair Work Commission to conduct the electronic ballot which we successfully carried out.

CiVS sent hundreds of eligible voters their unique login details via their preferred email address and to their mobile phone. Voters then lodged their responses to nine questions online and CiVS achieved an 80.4% participation rate which allowed the Protected Action Ballot to accurately reflect the democratic wishes of all union members.
